Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) Registration

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are devices used to help restart the heart during sudden cardiac arrest. Registering a device helps ensure that emergency responders are aware of its location and availability.

Property owners and organizations with automated external defibrillators are encouraged to register their devices and keep information up to date.

Legal Protection for AED Owners

In California, a law (Senate Bill 658) protects people and groups who have AEDs. You are protected from being sued if you follow some simple rules.

What You Need to Do

To follow the law, you must:

  • Follow the rules for where to place the AED
  • Tell Sacramento County EMS where the AED is, what type it is, and that you have one
  • Take care of the AED and test it as the maker says
  • Test it at least two times each year, and after you use it
  • Check it every 90 days
  • Keep records of all checks and tests

Extra Rules Based on Location

If the AED is in a building:

  • Tell people in the building once a year where the AED is
  • Share information about CPR and AED training (this is optional)
  • Show at least one person each year how to use the AED
  • Put clear instructions next to the AED (large, easy-to-read print)

If the AED is in a K-12 school:

  • The principal must make sure staff get yearly information about:
    • Sudden cardiac arrest
    • The school’s emergency plan
    • How to use an AED
  • Put clear instructions next to each AED
  • Tell staff each year where the AEDs are on campus

What You Don’t Have to Do Anymore

  • You do not need a doctor’s approval to buy or use an AED (except in health clubs)
  • Staff do not have to be CPR certified during business hours

If the AED Is Used

If you use the AED in an emergency, fill out a form and send it to Sacramento County EMS within 7 days.

Register Your AED

Make sure your AED is registered with Sacramento County EMS by sending in a registration form. Registration supports:

  • Faster response during cardiac emergencies
  • Public awareness of device locations
  • Maintenance and readiness of equipment
